Can I be in Brisbane already?
From the Files of the Unspeakably Kickass Cool: LEGO Serenity. It lights up! I wish it was an actual kit!
Speaking of Firefly, I finally made it to a E. [1] Browncoats shindig this weekend! I might make geeky friends in this town yet! It was Simon-themed; they had sake (yuckyuckyuck), and the games Operation and Simon, and also a version of Pin the ____ on the ___ where you were to reattach a girl's leg. To win a little stuffed hamster. Named Simon. Hee!
The group has a few members who know how to do silk-screening, so they've been making Firefly-themed T-shirts; a new design/character each month. I wish I'd found them sooner! I'm trying to convince the screener that we should do all the designs for the Biggest Shiniest Shindig next month, cuz I need cool Firefly Tshirts. *g* Also, we saw the preliminary movie-themed design for next month, and it is COOL. I may be quizzing everyone for their sizes soon for early Christmas prezzies. :->
Is there anyone reading who likes Firefly and wears an XL T-shirt? Give me a shout-out in the comments, bitte schön.
To follow up from the previous entry, I did hit B&N this weekend. They did not have Perchance to Dream, but I ordered it. I did get a copy of the current Entertainment Weekly, which has a v. nice article about Serenity. Apparently Universal will greenlight a sequel if the BIG DAMN MOVIE makes $80 mill or more. I have very little real inkling of the movie biz, but that seems extremely doable! Squee!
I just went down to the science library on one of my intermittent trips to see if they've gotten the print version of the journal issue with My Paper. (It takes *forever*! I wonder how much duplication there was in the scientific literature before everything went online?) And....they don't appear to carry that journal anymore. It has just completely disappeared from the shelf. So I headed back to my lab to check the catalog (because all the catalog computers in the actual library were being used by some kids who were using them to surf the Internet, and apparently this didn't bother the librarian at al. Keep in mind, I have no problem with the general public having access to university libraries, and in fact I believe they absolutely should; but they should also not take up all the catalog computers for random internet use). And it looks like UOregon has moved a bunch of journal subscriptions to pay-per-view. Which is probably a good idea, in the long run, with regard to saving the giant wad of cash subscriptions take up. But dude! I wanted to hold the journal in which I first published in my hands! *sigh* [2]
One of the newer lab members (B) just made a comment to the tech (A) about needing to do in vitro splicing sometime in the future of his project. Which is what I've been struggling with this summer. I yelled across the lab, "Get out! Get out while there's still time!"
A agreed: "Yes, you should consider leaving the lab right now."
Me: "Y'know, there's this truck driving school down in C.G...."
Granted, my next-to-last shot at this, Friday and over the weekend, actually gave me all the results I wanted this morning! Frabjous joy [3] of splicing activity (low, but there)! But as I flipped back in my notebook to determine what I was doing before this all went to hell, in order to pick up my old train of thought, I found that I've been working to get the damn stuff going again since 1 June. That's two months of my friggin' life, gone. ARGH! *falls on toothpick* [4]
[1]=E. not being East, but rather, this city. In the interests of vague Internet anonymity.
[2]=Can you tell I'm not overjoyed about the idea of ebooks?
[3]=What the hell is "frabjous joy" from, anyway? I think I picked it up from one of you guys.
[4]=Have I used/explained that before?

Hamster named Simon. Hee. I just finished watching Jaynestown, I get that reference now. This is like one big catchup.

Yay, splicing!
Alas on journals. But our library probably carries it -- we seem to freaking carry *everything* -- so if you come here, you can hold your journal. :-)
